Why morning is best

Wind builds during the day. Waves get bigger. The reef that was glassy at dawn becomes choppy by noon. Morning also means fewer boats on the water, so the reef feels less crowded and the guides can move at a relaxed pace. Book morning tours when you can.

Season by destination

Caribbean (Cozumel, Cancún, Key West): Year-round. Winter (December–February) can be windier but is still very snorkelable. Summer is hot and humid but the water is warm and usually calm.

Great Barrier Reef (Cairns): Best June–October (dry season). This is the southern hemisphere’s winter, so the weather is mild and the ocean is calmer. November–May is wet season: higher humidity, occasional storms, and stinger season (jellyfish) in parts of the reef. Tours run year-round but conditions are best mid-year.

Iceland (Silfra): Year-round. The water temperature is constant (2–4°C every month). Winter has shorter days and darker water; summer has longer light but no advantage in water temperature. Pick based on your tolerance for cold and daylight.

Bora Bora: Best May–October (dry season). This is the South Pacific’s winter and it means less rain, calmer lagoons, and milder trade winds. November–April is cyclone season, though tours still run if conditions permit.

Popular reef days sell out

The Great Barrier Reef and Bora Bora book up during peak season (June–August in the southern hemisphere, May–October for Polynesia). If you are flexible, midweek is calmer than weekends. Book a few days ahead to secure your spot with free cancellation.
